Description
Grimwater, West Virginia, on a rainy Friday night. Ghouls wade out of the lake, bats dive out of the storm and the neighbours dig themselves out of the cemetery. One town, one double-barrel, a Bowie knife and wave after wave, each bigger and faster than the last. Hold out as long as you can.
Archive notes
The only level of a shareware demo, "episode 1 of 1", credited to Bubba Joe Software, three people working out of a garage beside Grimwater Lake. According to the bundled liner notes, forty floppies were mailed out in March 1997, the same week Redneck Rampage reached the shelves, and a Texas shareware publisher turned the game down; the master disks reportedly spent the next decades in a shoebox marked TAXES 1997. The full game was to have three episodes, a boss called the Lake Mother and a secret level inside a Waffle House. The town is drawn in polygons at 320×240 with wobbling vertices, warped textures and 15-bit dithering, and a palette fault is said to have drained it to black and white, leaving only red. The monsters are flat sprites, and the hero's one-liners are spoken by the browser's speech synthesizer.
